The posted speed is 30MPH but at the top of the hill just 100 yards away it is 45 MPH. This is a real revenue producer. It's all about Money.

Arab, AL - Arab is trying to increase revenue to pay for their new radar guns. They also put people on probation that cannot pay, until it is paid off and they charge a whopping $35 a month in addition to the charge. No questions asked, they charge you even if you can produce the insurance card or the tag receipt you could not find on the day you were pulled over and ticketed for not having one of these items (could not find because you were so nervous does not matter to them).

I was presented with a $170 ticket and was afforded the option to pay court costs and gor to driving school for a total of $95. This was along with the other 300 people that were in there for similar reasons. They were all given the option to pay court costs.
Springville, AL - Any time going from Straight Mountain to Springville, down Murphree Valley Road, the City Police will be backed off the road in the small dirt "log roads" and trees. Sometimes it will be cars, other times motor cycles. I was going on this road, following a truck. I was pulled over for speeding. When ask why the truck was not stopped, I was told that I was behind the truck, therefore I was the one speeding. I answered that if I was behind, he had to be speeding if I was or I would run over him. The officer thought this very funny and stated that the truck was not speeding, but he only gave me a warning. Almost every morning going to work, cars will be pulled over to the side. The speed limit is 35 and they mean 35. This is about 3 miles before getting into the populated area.

So they can sit in that dip, facing either direction, and catch folks as they top the hill. You can tell it's not for safety. It's a safe area but for some reason they don't look for speeders about 5 miles west of there, which is the dangerous area. There's rarely a trap at the dangerous spots.
Hodges, AL - Alabama 172 runs from Bear Creek, AL through Hackleburg and Hodges and then turns into Alabama 19 in Vina on to Red Bay, AL. Upon exit from Marion County and entering Franklin County you are immediately in the Hodges Police Jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of the Franklin County Sherrifs Department. Speed drops from 55 to 45 then to 35 very rapidly and continues at 35 mph for approximately 2-3 miles. When entering Franklin County from Marion County be aware of this speed limit change. Hodges PD or Franklin County Sherrifs Dept. will sit at the bottom of a hill just beyond the 35 mph change to where they can see the 55 mph sign and the 45 mph sign. You cannot see the spot they sit until you have been clocked. If you are traveling at 60 mph when you pass the 45 mph sign, they will get you for 60 mph in a 45 mph zone or better yet, 55 in a 45. The Franklin County portion of Alabama 172 is heavily patroled by the Franklin County Sherrifs Department and the Alabama Highway Patrol. Hodges City is patroled by all three agencies. Often there will be a city cop and a deputy sitting in that two mile 35 mph stretch of state hwy 172. I have seen all three there at the same time on occasions. Speeding citations are what pays the city councelmen, the mayor and the officers of this town of 261 citizens. They have no other sources of revenue. They exploit the system greatly.

Madison, AL - Madison City Police Officers frequently run traffic radar on Brown's Ferry from Hughes to County Line. It is most common for them to run radar on Brown's Ferry in between Wall Triana (Sullivan) and County Line. The speed limit is 35mph, and this is a very reasonable speed where the road is twisty. However there are long straight stretches where traffic can safely and reasonably get up to 50mph on both ends (near County Line and Wall Triana/Sullivan). This is usually where Madison PD Traffic Enforcement Units run their "Moving Radar."

Madison, AL - Eastview has short hills on both ends connecting Hughes and Slaughter Road. The center section is a very long stragiht downhill/uphill section where you will exceed the 35mph speed limit unless you ride the brakes down the hill. The police like to hide in the side streets and use radar as you come down the hill or over a crest. I have seen as many as a dozen offices picking off rush hour commuters. In that the newspaper announced 28% rise in crime for the local area...you would think that these officers could be better used? Be careful, other sites include Gooche Road, Madison Boulvard. I have heard numeous commments that reinforce that Madison is doing a good job of building a reputation as a speed trap city. City has a very large police force for its size. Be careful.

Anniston, AL - Just as you are topping the hill @ 22nd Street and Quintard, on the right, past the putt-putt golf and the National Guard Armory, there is a road that is almost a driveway. APD sits there, many times with lights off in the dark. They drive the normal Crown Victorias, but have also added F-250 white crew cabs to their fleet, so it doesn't look like a cop car. Speed limit is 35, but it's hard to manage it up that steep hill that's right before it.

Heflin, AL - A large number of Alabama State Troopers were camping the exit near Heflin Alabama on I-20, in Cleburn county. They were armed with Lidar, and stopping large numbers of people at once. It is extremely hard to see this Speedtrap until you have a State Trooper entering the highway with your car picked out and his lights on. Be aware, holiday travelers returning from Atlanta or further afar.

Heflin, AL - The trap is a combination of Cleburne County Sherriff's Department and Alabama State Patrol forces. They put a plain SUV (usually a late 90's model Jeep Cherokee) on the Overpass, with a Tripod set up, so it looks as if they are surveyers. When you come by they clock you and there are 4 or 5 ASP Troopers waiting on the ramp for you to come by.

Speeding tickets are $119.00 but if you contest the ticket they will throw it out providing you pay the court costs which are $120.00. (It has been rumoured that not all tickets are sent in to the state.) Tickets are written for whatever reasons the officer on duty feels deemable to see as a violation. The town uses ever letter of the law to write violations within the legal limit. (Maybe.) Highways 77&144 are unavoidable when traveling through Ohatchee so please heed the posted limit lest you be detained by Ohatchee's finest. (They love out-of-towner's.)

My previous comments were deleted to what I believe was the case name, but I will not say the name now in attempt to put the decades old speedtrap into context and help people protect themselves from the trap. Also, the northern part of the hwy 59 split is equal in terms of speedtrap. This town is one of the worst in the state and one of the worst in the state over time while other speedtraps have come and gone, Robertsdale remained a speedtrap.

Phenix City, AL - When driving south along 4th Ave. the speed limit drops from 40 mph to 20 mph with a poorly placed sign that stays hidden behind foliage. Police cars camp out next to the 'Fine Foods' store near the low Railroad bridge. I and about 12 other friends and acquaintances have gotten a ticket for 40 in a 20.

Phenix city, AL - just as you cross the river from columbus, ga. into phenix city, al. on j.r. allen parkway there are always 2 motorcycle cops using radar. it is a construction zone but also the signs are decieving. it goes from 65 mph to 45 mph in less than 200 feet then on down the road it returns to 55 then 65. both these cops are jerks and love to give out tickets. this road is known by some as trap highway.
