The officer sits just before Lomita Blvd, you can see him from quite a distance, but you don't feel like you are speeding at 50MPH, at 40 MPH you feel like you are crawling. The officer barely has time to stop, he gives out tickets one right after the other. The bad thing about this is that on Lomita Blvd, where there is numerous residential streets, with cars trying to enter, cars are dangerously speeding on Lomita Blvd, and there has been numerous accidents, the police never watch.

<geo:long>-118.154</geo:long>

Long Beach, CA - •Mostly Radar enforcement - motorcycle cops. This is heading (generally) Eastbound on Ocean Boulevard as you come through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Through the port - the speed limit is 45 MPH - very low for a limited access roadway that is 2 and 3 lanes wide each direction. But, once you get past the last bridges, the speed limit drops to 30 MPH along Ocean Boulevard - a 3 lane in each direction, major down town street. The officers are usually situated on Golden Shore Drive, just beyong the traffic light or across the street in the Hyatt (?) covered drive through (porte-cochere). Sometimes, the officers are right there on Ocean, pulling you over. Additionally, less than a quarter of a mile before this location, you may also see motorcycle officers with radar hiding behind/under an overpass ramp from Ocean Avenue onto the northbound 710 freeway. This is at the bottom of the incline from the Gerald Desmond bridge and is a 45 into 40 MPH zone. Again, unfair enforcement on a major, but limited access roadway!

Arcadia, CA - The trap happens between Colorado Pl. and Hungtington Blvd. When Colorado Pl. forks, the right hand side turns into Colorado Place. Colorado Place is immediately adjacent to the infamous Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, CA. There are small pull off points all along this stretch of Colorado Place that are intended for in/out flow of traffic for the race track parking. The officer generally sits next to one of these blocked entrance/exit locations and points the radar north towards Colorado St. Colorado place is a nice speed trap since the speed limit is reduced down from 45 MPH to 40 MPH after a blind turn and a downhill. Suffice to say it's hard to see the speed limit sign if you're not paying attention. The Colorado St. speed limit is 45 MPH but the traffic flow is generally 55 MPH. It's really easy to speed on this stretch of road, and many cars do.

La Crescenta, CA - •Briggs Ave is a quiet two-lane road in a residential neighborhood of La Crescenta that goes downhill with 30 mph speed limit. Due to the downgrade, no one drives 30. Once in a few months (like clockwork), CHP officers will be at down of the hill, pointing radar guns at morning commuters and citing them. Once, one motorcycle CHP officer was stopping multiple cars at the same time (stopping one, then while that cas is waiting, writing citation for another car already stopped and waiting and so on). This is a LA County Sheriff jurisdiction, at least a mile from the freeway. I realize that CHP technically also has jurisdiction in local streets too, but what the heck are they doing at least a mile away from the freeway? This is a blatant attempt to collect some money from the local residents. Notice that since CHP does the ticketing, the local LA County Sheriffs supposedly "has nothing to do with it". If they are really concerned about the safety, they should install a speedbump or two instead of ticketing the motorists. Of course, the speedbumps won't generate any revenue.

That street has 45 mph posted and drivers are accustomed to jetting through. The sheriffs often lurk when school starts and ends. If you do not touch your gas you will be going between 45-50 MPH. The speed limit is 35. So instead of the speed limit being 40 or 45 you have to break which is ridiculous and really bad on gas milage.
Azusa, CA - San Gabriel is a one-way street heading South toward the 210 freeway (on ramps). The trap is just North of the 210 and supports heavy traffic. The officer is usually on a motorcycle (although I believe I have also noticed patrol cars). The officer sits hidden between parked cars on the right side of the road, just as the road curves and narrows, and drivers must merge into the lane on their left. I suspect the officers 1)have had problems with drivers speeding/cutting off others while trying to merge, or 2) know that the driver's attention will be directed to the left (away from them) while negotiating the curve and merging traffic.

The real catch is that the speed limit on that section of the 10 is 65mph, and the connecting road is unmarked, but the cop will write it as a 55mph limit. So just by turning onto the connector, you're 10mph over. I got written for 68mph in a 55. I've seen this trap in operation dozens of times.

Maricopa, CA - I was ticketed in Maricopa CA at the end of January 2008. I was coming into town from the west on hwy 166. As you come to first group of houses the speed limit changes from 55 to 45. I slowed to 45 as I passed this sign. A couple hundred feet later the speed limit changes to 35 and right after that you come to curve in the road where you have to slow down because there is a stop sigh where the curve ends and hwy 166 and hwy 33 intersect, so it’s impossible to speed through town. It is possible for them to hit you with radar right as you pass the 35mph sign and right before you enter the curve. They clamed I was doing 50 in a 35 and gave me a ticket. But I am sure I was slowing from 45mph to 35mph as I passed the 35mph sign, and I never would have been able to navigate the curve and stop at the intersection if I had been going 50mph.

Lancaster, CA - This one's a doozy. The speed limit is not posted for miles. I didn't know what the speed limit was (65 mph) and had no idea I was "speeding" when I got pulled over. CHP radio cars hide on the Avenue M on-ramp to the northbound side of Route 14. On Saturdays you may see a whole row of them waiting to pounce. They just "estimate" the speed of a random car without radar--which means they can grossly exaggerate how fast you were going and you can't do a thing about it. Even worse, the ticket doesn't provide instructions (much less a phone number) for settling the thing by mail so you don't have to go to court. You may even be facing a Misdemeanor for speeding! My guess is you're not safe in either direction on Route 14 until you're out of the Lancaster-Palmdale city limits. Definitely watch yourself between Avenue A (the L.A. county line) and Avenue S (closer to L.A. proper).

Sacramento, CA - I can't believe this speedtrap isn't already on this site. It is on Land Park Drive between the Sacramento Zoo through William Land Park to Broadway. The posted limit is 25 (at least for the parts that go past Cal Middle School, I am not sure if it is all 25mph) and motorcycle cops like to sit on side streets through the residential area and in the park with their radars. I got ticketed for doing 44mph. Often several motorcycle cops will pull over several motorists at once. The street is very wide so it kind of tricks people into thinking the speed limit is higher than it really is, but "25mph" is painted all over the street. I can tell many people know about this trap because people tend to drive very slowly around this area. There are some very well-to-do people that live in this area and when they complain about speeders it is obvious the cops listen.

I pulled the recent radar speed survey for the city of Benicia and Panorama Drive is not on the list within the last five years. The study has not been done, and therefore law enforcement has no legal right to enforce a limit that is not in compliance with the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
Lafayette, CA - This is one of the easiest stretches to speed on because you're coming down a relatively sharp incline for a 45mph road, which soon changes to 35 mph. As you're on your way down the hill, Green Valley Drive will be on your right hand side (there's an intersection with stoplights), and the squad car waits just on the edge of Green Valley Drive so they can punch it as soon as you pass, it's about halfway down the hill before you get to Springhill Rd so it's easy for them to catch you. Just keep it your mph at 40 on your way down the hill, the speed limit changes to 35 anyway at the bottom.

I have received numerous tickets in this area. One was written for going 101 miles an hours. I think the officer never thought that someone from SF would come to his town to contest it. I did and the judge dropped it to "going over the speed limit". He did not reduce the extra fine however --instead opted to ok me for traffic school.
