Baldwin City, KS - High street comes off of highway 56 and turns to 30 MPH. 2nd street is closed and barricaded so the cop can park in the direction that would normally block the street and post radar. They are not visible until you are just about to pass 2nd street and by then it's too late.

Basehor, KS - Heading north on 155th. past LV Road where the speed limit changes from 30 to 50. Did You Know... you can Not begin to accelerate until you've reached the 50mph sign? My ticket was for going 40 in a 30 but I was close enough to the 50mph I could have spit on it. The cop told me that I could not begin to speed up until I reached the sign. I asked him does that also apply going the other way?? I don't have to slow down coming into town until I reach the 30mph sign?? He told me I would be issued a ticket either way and that was "splitting hairs."

Leavenworth, KS - Eastbound 92 hwy coming down hill heading into the city of Leavenworth. As you enter the city limits you go from a state hwy with mixed speeds to a 30 mph as soon as you cross the city limit sign which is located near bottom of the hill with no speed reduction posting. Patrol sets up in the entrance of the county extension office shooting west to intercept traffic which is oblivious to the sudden change of speeds. Additional complexities...drivers are coming off hill in coast, watching for traffic, as there are multiple drives at the bottom of the hill and therefore in defensive mode. Years ago this area had a speed reduction zone; the added confusion doesn't help.

Lawrence, KS - I can't believe this isn't here yet. I see them at least once a week if not more, morning and evening. The cop likes to park behind the church at Mass and 20th and get traffic going north. At times, there will be two, one on foot with the radar gun and one in a car. I've even seen the one on foot walk out in front of traffic to stop speeders.

Lawrence, KS - Just a bit past W. Princeton Blvd on Peterson Rd is a school zone. The zone only lasts about 1 block but the speed limit is cut down from 40mph to 20mph. There is a flashing school zone sign to let people know when it is in effect also. I drive this road daily and at least 3 out of 5 days there is a cop with his radar gun pulling people over. Sometimes he is standing and his car is somewhat hidden. Other times he is in his car. When going towards N Iowa you will be coming over a hill before reaching this area, so just be prepared to slow down if it's around school start or end time.

Olathe, KS - This speed trap is located in Olathe Kansas (Johnson County) on I-35 south-bound, south of 151st street (Great Mall) and north of the semi-truck weigh-station (about a 3 mile stretch). This is an incredible speed trap. (I can't believe it's not already on this website.) It is run by the Olathe police department and isn't set up very often but when it is, it is huge! Today, going north-bound, I counted 9 cruisers, 4 motorcyles, and 2 SUVs that had someone pulled over, I saw 2 more cruisers sitting on the 151st street ramp waiting on their radios for a chance to pounce. And I saw all this with just One Pass! I'd be surprised if they didn't have 20+ vehicles involved. They may be doing this today (or this week) to cash in on all the Kansas City traffic headed to Gardner for the Johnson County Fair. I wasn't stopped. I'm putting this here because while I don't have a problem with the service our public servants provide our communities, I do have a real problem with the predatory practice of speed traps.

Olathe, KS - Cruisers and Motorcycle cops like to sit at the top of the hill between 119th St. and College Blvd. on Woodland. They get a great view both directions (2 blocks north and at least 5 blocks south) of traffic. It's a 40MPH zone but we creatures of habit tend to drive like it is a 45MPH zone (and push the edges too far). They are very hard to see sitting on the side street until it is way too late. I would say once every two weeks they work it fairly hard.

Manhattan, KS - On Fort Riley Blvd, as you pass 17th street and begin to exit the city of Manhattan, heading towards Ogden and Fort Riley. There are two sections of grassy median that lie underneath an overpass, right where the highway curves to the left. At any time of day, but usuall around 9am and 6pm, there will be 1 or 2 cop cars hidden in that median and obscured by the overpass and curve in the road. They clock cars coming from both directions in a 300 yard zone where the 45mph city speed increases to 55mph highway speed, and in another 600 yards to 65mph. Speed up or slow down more than a few yards on the wrong side of the sign and expect a ticket.

The entire stretch from the city limits at Atkinson on the south to the junction of Hiway 160, where the limit changes back to 65 mph is heavily patrolled and fastidiously enforced, with very little leniency and no humor at all. I was not speeding, but the Troopers radar detected a speeder and pulled me over after I rounded the curve. The economy is depressed in Emporia and Lyon County.
Harper, KS - The intersections of US 160, K14 and nearby where K-2 ends is always covered during the holidays when families are happy and traveling home ward. Why these people want to spoil the good times for families is beyond my comprehension. It is especially disheartening to see them there during the Holidays, and folks are trying to give gifts to those they love. I won't eat at the cafes on the highway any longer because of this treatment to visitors to Harper.

Kingman, KS - Outside the Kingman Police station is a street intersection with a stop sign set at a slightly out of kilter angle so it is very difficult to see. The cops wait outside to see who runs the stop sign so they can "nail" them if they so desire. Most cops do not like older women and it is a given that they will quickly ticket you if you are an older female. It is easy to see by the position of the stop sign--slightly odd angle and height--that it is a planned trap and easy money for the law boys loitering outside the station door.•

Hugoton, KS - coming into Hugoton on rt 51 from the east, police car sits just outside of town, near the police station, picking off mainly out of towners from wichita etc travelling through to New Mexico. The road outside of town is wide open, empty space farmland, no dwellings etc. the exact type of road that is easy to speed on. They wait outside of the town limits where most people would begin to slow down. They get you before that.
