Kittery, ME - The speed limit for the first few miles after crossing the bridge on I95 from NH to Maine are 55mph which is well below normal (safe) traffic speed (especially as you are carrying speed after going down the other side of the bridge) The Maine Troopers appear to run at least a monthly sting here where they waste countless tax dollars by hiding 5 cruisers out of sight on an exit ramp. One trooper runs the radar it seems and then they dispatch the hidden cruisers. I have counted up to 8 Cruisers involved in this program before and no doubt they run this up and down 95 regularly from Kittery to Portland. I have yet to be involved in it, but always think it is "A wonderful welcome" to tourists visiting the so called Vacationland I call home. Stick to 65mph for a few miles once you hit the top of the bridge until you are 5 miles up the road to be safe.

Biddeford, ME - The entire street is posted at 25mph. It's especially hard to keep your speed down on the downward grade near South Street, and the police use this to their advantage. Most often, they sit headed northwest in the baseball field parking lot. Police in Biddeford write tickets, never warnings, so beware.

Biddeford, ME - As you drive out of the city past the new shopping mall the speed limit is 35mph. At the top of the hill it goes to 45mph. They will sit on a side street on the right, Andrews Rd., and before you see them you're on radar. In my experience the Cop was polite, but my niece met his evil twin. He was rude and sarcastic. My understanding it that they have to summons you or write a report to their Chief explaining why they didn't. If he doesn't like the reason the Cop is disciplined. When Police Officers are not allowed to exercise discretion nobody benefits. If they want to get people to pay attention to the speed limit a warning is just as good. All I learned from my experience was to not shop in Biddeford.

Portland, ME - This has to the prime cherry-picking spot in Portland. Be very aware, although this is US Rt. 1, it is treated as a private drive by both Portland and Falmouth cops.

You exit 50 mph US-I-295 at Tukey's Bridge northbound. Halfway down the exit ramp, the speed limit drops to 30 mph. Admittedly, there is a small section where Martin's Point "hospital" (actually a rehab center) is on the right (south) and yes, there are a couple of residential intersections on the left/north side.

This is the rationale for the 30 mph zone. An enlightened government, with less than money-sucking in mind, would simply reconfigure the few intersections (banning cross-traffic turns, for example) to allow a safe higher speed limit. But, rather than do that, they inconvenience thousands of commuters daily for the benefit of a few locals. Mind-boggling. Did Route 1 arrive after these people?

Immediately after this small section, you are on what Used to be a four lane bridge, then a four lane section of US Rt 1 and the speed limit goes up to 40 mph.

I say it used to be four lane because that was too useful and the go-slows pressured the state into allowing them to - believe it or not - block off two lanes of a four lane road on a state highway to slow traffic down.

So - the state taxpayers stumped up to build the road and then the fat-cat locals (this is one of the richest areas in the state) convinced the gov't to "discourage" traffic.

Falmouth, ME - Moderate enforcement of the 30MPH speed limit section of Woodville Road, especially in and around Falmouth High School and Falmouth Middle School. Cops tend to either hide off the road near the Middle School (facing Falmouth Road), and/or hiding off the road near the High School (facing Field Road). Woods Road and part of Woodville Road is 40MPH speed limit. Cops sometimes pull over people going over the speed limit coming from those parts of those roads.

Hampden, ME - Main Road South and North (Route 1A) bisects Hampden, Maine. The speed limit on the road is 35 because of the built up areas. 35 is a bit slow and it is a commuter road, so people tend to move along. Don't! The local police like to stake out the road at various intervals from the Bangor line down to the Winterport line. It's easy pickings! So, slow down.

Hampden, ME - Coming out of the center of Hampden is Route 9 joining into 202. The speed limits stay low until well outside of the center. The tendency is, of course, to speed up once past the town offices. Don't. Local law enforcement like to patrol this stretch--it's easy pickings, especially at rush. Same goes for the sections of 202/9 to the town line going westbound. The limit is 55, varying down to 35 at intersections of popular cross roads. Again, easy pickings. So--slow down.

Hampden, ME - Known as "the ditch" this area has a completely unrealistic speed limit of 25 mph on a state highway leading into the town. There is a hill on both sides of a bridge crossing a stream, the one to the south being the steepest. Trying to do 25 mph is dangerous; it's too slow to be safe on the hills with traffic behind you. You'll get run down. Plus, it's a perfect speed trap with a waterworks parking lot at the bottom of the hill for the local law enforcement to sit in. Don't get me wrong--our local cops are the greatest, but this little speedtrap pushes the edges of common sense and reason a bit far.

Rush hours are heavily monitored. Men driving trucks are rarely stopped - women in cars and the 'caboose' driver in a line of traffic are the preferred easy targets. This street has a speed limit of 35 - most roads that are comparable to Old County Road have speed limits around 40-45 - and some even at 50. First timers on the road are often ticketed instead of warned. (Inside source said that speeding ticket revenue has Doubled since traffic was diverted to this road.)
