I got a ticket for "rolling through" the stop sign, even though I had to come to a complete stop - six cars ran the red light, thus rendering a "roll-through" impossible - I would have been killed on impact. With usually only one cruiser on duty it is not hard to see that the rest of the city has very little police protection. This street is marked Zero Tolerance of the 25 MPH speed limit. The downtown area is marked between 40-30 MPH on M57. Makes sense to me. The Police will argue that downtown is a state hwy and it cannot be marked any lower. I would like to know just how many peoples insurance rates have risen because they drove a few miles per hour over the posted 25MPH and were given points on their driving record. In all my life I have never driven in a town where so many tickets were issued in a one mile stretch. The Grand Haven PD and the Ottawa county SD hide their vehicles between stands of pine trees on this stretch, at all hours of the day and night. They particularly love to ticket drivers who are trying to get around slow moving semis (an extremely aggravating problem, especially during the morning commute). This stretch of highway brings in significant revenue and the officers will not hesitate to pull you over and slap you with a ticket for 1-5 over... I have seen the same officers ticketing different drivers only five or ten minutes apart on both sides of the same stretch of highway.
