Clarkson Valley, MO - Speed limit is 30 miles an hour from Clarkson Road to Wild Horse Creek. It's hard keeping within this limit as there are lots of hills where you pick up speed naturally without braking. Squad cars hide in the entrances of subdivisions and side streets making it very hard to view until it's too late. There's very low tolerance for speeders.

This is the only stretch of 141 where the speed limit drops to 45 from 50mph. There are no signs indicating the change of speed limit. I travel this route every day and I have never not seen someone pulled over, no matter what time of day or night. The state of Missouri decided that 50mph was a safe speed for the entire lenght of 141 yet only the city of Manchester dropped the limit to 45mph and post officers here 24/7. If this is not the definition of a speed trap, I don't know what is !

They usually don't go after you unless you're going more than 5 or 10 mph over. However, round the end of the month, they usually stick pretty close to the speed limit. I was stopped without cause, with a passenger, and was traveling the posted speed limit (30). The officer stated on his ticket, that has the incorrect vehicle year and color listed, that he paced me going 11 miles over the speed limit. The officer trailed me for one half mile without incident at a distance of 250'. I have a Florida tag. Only until I made a required turn did he decide to pull me over. His first statement was where am I coming from when I was just passing through their little town. Beverly Hills is dangerous to the public. They will stop you for almost any thing and give you a ticket. You will be assigned a court date where you will sit for as much as several hours then the date will be reassigned and you given a new court date. If you are lucky it will not happen again (delay court date that is). The good news is 90% of the time the judge will dismiss the case. The sad part about is the Village has been in the newspaper and on television for this very problem. My suggestion is to avoid the village, because again they will ticket for any thing.

I came to a complete stop, started around the truck, and the officer pulled me over, gave me a ticket for running off the pavement. He gave me a ticket for passing on/driving on shoulder, cost $178 plus $52 court costs, which was very excessive for a minor offense. I feel that in a town of 331 people, four police cars parked in the police lot, not being used, plus those on patrol. It is obvious that this little town uses it's police force to generate funds from unsuspecting motorists from out of town. This town of Foristell intersects with I-70, which is the main speed trap for tourists and truckers.

Also, just west of Hunt Street exit is a roadway known as Leadwood Cemetery road. They like to set off the Highway there on both sides of highway. Leadwood has practically no businesses anymore so city depends alot on revenue from speeding tickets.
Bernie, MO - The stretch of Highway 25 that runs through Bernie is a notorious speed trap from one end of town to the other. Coming south from Dexter, the speed limit is 55 until you get about 1/2 mile north of Bernie, where it goes to 45. About 2/10 mile later, it drops to 25 for a 1/2 mile, goes back up to 45 briefly and then back to 55 south of town. The most common places for the officer to hide are:

Platte City, MO - •After exiting I-29 at exit 18, going west (or north-?) into Platte City, MO, the speed limit changes from 55 to 45 to 35 m.p.h. within about 150-200 yds. from I-29. I was driving to a meeting at about 5 a.m., came off the I-29 north at exit 18, turned left onto state hwy 92 west toward Platte City, when I noticed that I was going a bit fast (about 55 m.p.h.) as I crossed over the interstate, and I knew that the speed limit would drop to 35 m.p.h. on just the other side of the first light on the edge of town. I watched my speed drop from 55 to 45, then as I crossed the first intersection at a green light, my speed was falling below 35 m.p.h. as I passed the 35 m.p.h. sign located just past the light. At about the same time, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that there was a Platte City policeman parked on the side of the road just past the 35 m.p.h. sign, and I thought to myself "Whew, I dropped to 35 just in time!". Sure enough his lights come on. I immediately pulled over, thinking "he must have got me for doing 55 in the 45." He came up to my car and said that he got me doing 55 in the 35! I know that this isn't true as I was deliberately slowing down, and I know that I was doing no more than 35 when I passed the sign! Plus I am very careful about obeying posted speed limits. While my inattention should have cost me for the 55 in the 45, which was true, he cited me for the wrong speed. Intentional or not? I don't know, but my opinion is that I was ripped off for about 10 m.p.h. on my ticket. You can draw your own conclusion, but mine was that I needed to buy a radar detector so I wouldn't be caught in any dishonest speed traps ever again. I immediately ordered a radar detector, my first one. I never thought I would need it, and I don't use it to speed even now, just for warning of what's ahead of me.

Kansas City, MO - I-70 from downtown Kansas City to I-435. I have no idea how this section of I-70 did not make the national top ten list. I have driven all over this country and most of the top ten cities and have never seen any stretch as abused as this one. On the published list from the KC PD this is their #1 moneymaker by far. The only time you won't see police is during rush hours and that is because 55 is only a dream at those times. Also be aware that they like to use unmarked vans that look harmless. Somebody said something about helicopter enforcement but I don't believe that happens (helicopters cost way to much to operate). This idea probably is due to the fact the KC PD helicopter home base is close to the intersection of I-435 and I-70. Somebody also stated you have to get a lawyer to plea the tickets in KC, this abusive policy used to be true but is no longer correct. For many years I was a courier in this city driving over 50,000 miles every year and unfortunately know this is just a bizarre stretch of abusive enforcement.

Coming north on 169, you crest a hill about 1/4 mile before the split, so it's almost impossible to see the cop before he can nail you unless you're going pretty close to the speed limit.
Riverside, MO - The Horizons Parkway exit is currently under construction, and the Riverside Public Safety department is practicing opportunistic enforcement of this work zone. As you are traveling NB on I-635 and cross the Missouri river bridge from Kansas into Missouri, you must slow down very rapidly from full highway speed to the work zone posted speed of 50 MPH. An officer will be positioned with LIDAR to catch anyone who might still be decelerating. While work zone speed enforcement is usually a good thing, this department's enforcement represents a Speed Trap because the area being enforced is the first few hundred feet of the zone, far from the actual construction area. When our state officials enacted these work zone laws, the intent was to protect highway workers, not to have local police agencies aggressively enforcing these laws outside of areas where construction workers are actually present. Riverside Public Safety is doing the citizens of Riverside, the state of Missouri, and highway construction workers a great disservice by picking-up "easy" citations from people who haven’t yet had an opportunity to slow down for a work zone that is still a few thousand feet ahead.

They will sit barely inside the lower speed limit zone. When traveling westbound, don't even think of speeding up past 45 until you have PASSED the 60mph sign. They will sit well inside the 60 mph zone and clock you right at the 60mph sign. I was once politely told that you do not accelerate above 45 until you have passed the sign.

Nevada, MO - This trap is at the west edge of the city limits. It is on the westbound lane of a 4-lane highway. The last posted limit in town is 30mph. The trap is right as the highway goes into a divided highway and the 65 mph sign is right where he sits with his radar. Any normal thinking person would begin to approach the speed posted on the sign when it is clearly visible. The police in this town are counting on that. They maintain that the new speed limit is not in effect until you pass the sign. Their own statutes state that the 65 mph speed begins at Webster road where the officer sits, the sign is 300 feet past this. I have searched the statutes for both Nevada and Missouri and can find no such mention of the speed limit starting at the sign. I have been taught by Highway Patrol Officers and Driver Safety courses to always anticipate signs and react appropriately in advance, Never after you pass the sign. If anyone knows any case law on this I would appreciate knowing about it.

Columbia, MO - A speed trap is currently in operation every weekday (around noon to 2 pm) at the crossroads of Stadium Blvd and College Ave/Rock Quarry Rd. A marked MU police cruiser will park facing towards Highway 63 (on the side opposite of where the Campus Inn used to sit) on the right side of Stadium Blvd. Due to a slight hill and traffic congestion, it will be hard to see until you are almost on it. This one is VERY consistent, I see it daily on my way to class. Good luck!

New Franklin, MO - Speed trap is generally anywhere along Hwy. 5 also watch out for not coming to a COMPLETE stop at STOP signs on the town square. Speed limit goes from 55 on Hwy. 5 to 30 as soon as you're in the city limits. They will allow 35 mph but often fudge the ticket to 36 mph especially if you're an "out of towner" and often if you're not.

Springfield, MO - The speed is lowered from 30 mph to 20 mph only between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm, and only for the 1-2 blocks west of National on Grand (in front of Missouri State stadium). The officers will sit, sometimes up to 3-4 cars, in the entryway where buses pull into the stadium, and pull over anyone who forgot to slow down for that 1-2 block zone. The posting that the speed limit is lowered does not have any flashing lights and is not posted very clearly (only once so if you miss it then you are unaware). They mostly sit there around noon. It is good that the speed is lowered because it is by a large pedestrian/university intersection but I also think they should post it more clearly, and extend the school zone for more than a block so people are more aware of it.
