I notice they like to use radar, but it wouldn't surprise me if they use other things too. a radar detector will usually go off since the monument itself has 2 detectors in it, as part of one of their exhibits (last time I saw them up close was about 2-3 years ago). I have also seen them facing the flow of traffic, very close to the bases of the building on either side of the interstate.
