Manhattan, NY - The Henry Hudson Parkway runs north up the west side of Manhattan. It is also known as the "West Side Highway". On the northbound side there are a set of curves where the speed limit drops from 50 to 35. NYPD-Highway sits here and writes for over 60 mph. The limit goes back up to 50 near the toll booth. While the area is signed, most cars moving at the 60 mph average coming out of the 50 zone don't slow down. This is a very expensive ticket, as it is "heard" in Traffic Violations Bureau, where there are No deals, so the six or eight point ticket results in $300-$450 in Points Tax and a fine of $140 to $230. This is the single worst speedtrap in NYC.

You cannot see him until it's too late, as you come over the overpass over Forest Ave. So you must slow down right after the Forest Ave. exit. To add insult to injury, the speed limit drops to 45 from 50 right there. Also, most cars get off at Richmond Terrace exit rather than get on the Bayonne Bridge, so you're a dead duck pursuit-wise.

Bronx, NY - •After exiting the toll plaza on the Throgs Neck Bridge, you are offered two choices: the Cross Bronx Expressway/Bruckner Expressway (to the left) or the Throgs Neck Expressway (to the right). Both are posted 40 mph work zones (numerous signs), however, the Throgs Neck Expressway signs start @ least 1 mile before you actually get to the work zone. As you come around the bend approaching Randall Avenue, there "he" is sitting on the grass. "He" is an NYPD Highway Patrol Officer, & he has issued numerous summonses @ this location. As a resident of the area, I routinely see him stop people about every 8-12 minutes (yes!-just that fast). I recently asked him about the location & he was very polite/informative and gave me a very detailed explanation about the area, his tolerance, and the penalties. This Officer doesn't write anyone less than 30 mph over the posted speed limit (which if you ask me is extremely fair). Unfortunately the fines are doubled and driver's who come through this area and get caught face a minimum fine of $180 + the surcharge & 6 pts (and that's only if you are doing 70mph). If you are convicted for more than 70: it's a whopping $360 + surcharge & 8pts. This also doesn't include the driver's responsibility assessment that DMV added which adds a minimum of $300 for the 1st 6pts and $25 for every pt after 6 (ouch!). My suggestion is that you don't speed through this area....ever.

Garden City, NY - The tree lined road next to Roosevelt Field mall has several speed traps, hidden among the trees. There are also undercover officers driving the road. This road is used by Hofstra students and truckers mostly, so the police give more tickets there. The speed drops suddenly for a school zone and bushes often block the signs. The police will usually have a flurry of activity, where they will have two or three traps set and will pull over a car as they pull away from a car they just stopped, followed by no activity for a while. They usually just pull over students and truckers, so if you don't fall into one of those categories you can go much faster, making the road unsafe.

I've seen a trooper about 1 out of 10 times while going south around 11-12 pm. He sits on that opening with a no U-turn sign. Sometimes i see one watching the north side near that section, but it's fairly rare.

Poughkeepsie, NY - The arterial(rt 44/55), is a brad, highway looking road cutting through the city of Poughkeepsie. It has a posted 30mph speed limit and it is fairly well enforced, with police seetting up radar traps in several parking areas past curves. One I got stopped at was set up at Baker Street, but I have seen them at Clinton and Grand as well. It is very deceiving, because the road looks like a 55 mph zone.

Masonville, NY - NYS Police regularly sit in the parking lot of a former elementary school, located near a sharp curve. They train their radar on the crest of a rise coming into Masonville, to catch vehicles travelling south from Sidney, NY. Route 8 between the towns is wide and smooth and the speed limit is 55 mph until just before one enters Masonville, when the limit drops to 30 mph. Masonville is a small hamlet, with a four-way stop at the intersection of Rt 8 and Rt 206. It is a rural area, so the sudden drop in speed limit is unanticipated unless you are a resident of the area. It is significant that the posted limit is 40 mph on Rt 206, but only 30 mph on Rt 8, approaching the same intersection. State Police like to man the trap during the morning and early afternoon on weekends, and are often there for the holidays throughout the year. Thanksgiving - Christmas seems to be a favorite time. Since the village is little more than a rural crossroad with a few houses and a convenience store, I can only assume that it is revenue generation rather than safety issues that merit the presence of up to three State Police cruisers at that location.

Oxford, NY - Village Speed Limit of 30mph is continued for an unreasonably long distance outside the village along State Highway 12. South of the village of Oxford especially, there is a stretch of Hwy 12 that stays 30mph well outside the village - for no apparent reason other than revenue enhancement. Traffic expects to speed up to 40 or 50 after the village traffic lights, but the speed limit continues to be 30. Many people get caught by the local village police.

Binghamton, NY - Broome County Sheriffs and/or New York State Police will park on the official only U-Turn just before the exit (assuming you're coming from Scranton, PA). There is a large set of trees that the sheriff deputies like to point their radar guns through, whereas the New York State Police do not aim radar guns through the trees. Interestingly, the state police appear to have started using VASCAR here. There will typically be two state police cars at the bunker when the state police are waiting for speeders, so the sight of the state police gives some time for aware motorists travelling 80 MPH to slow down to the 65 MPH limit.

Canandaigua, NY - North Main Street starts in the center of the City. The speed trap is on the far north section of North Main, north of Buffalo/Chapel Streets intersection, in the residential area. They sit in driveways and road ways on the right. In the summer, they often have one car working the radar, and a number of other cars pulling over the drivers. I have even seen them do this with a combination of City officers, Sheriff deputies and State troopers. It's a wide 4 lane (parking on both sides) so doing 40 does not feel "uncomfortably" fast, and they are very strict. Used to give you 10 mph, then changed to 8. Last I read in the local paper, they were only giving 4-5 mph, less depending on the traffic flow.

Local police will hide there at random times throughout the day, but mostly in the early mornings when there is little traffic. As mentioned in other listings, the speed limit changes from 45 to 35 a little ways down the road. If you fly by this area at a ridiculous speed, prepare to see lights flashing behind you and be handed an expensive ticket before you reach the Wegmans supermarket and Town Plaza.
