Clemmons, NC - Heading West on I-40 between the 421 split and the Clemmons exit (184) cops sit in the median, usually in pairs. They will catch you heading east or west. I-40 is 3 lanes at this point and I believe it's 65 mph although with little traffic you could easily go 80+

Clemmons, NC - Forsyth County Sheriff's Department has two hiding locations on the beginning mile of Hampton Road coming from Highway 158 (Stratford Rd)where the posted speed is 35. The first location is in the parking lot of Clemmons Milling Co. They back up behind the tractor trailers in the parking lot. The second location is about 1/4 mile down from that at the entrance of a neighborhood street just before the curve where the speed limit goes up to 45.

King, NC - The King p.d likes to sit on kirby road, either at the church as you enter the road from old hwy 52. Or a few other spots after you pass the church. It is a 35 zone, so stay 35, dont enter King unless you have the right tags, registration, working signals and all lights. Worst chance for getting pulled in the triad. Worse at night but they still sit around during the day.

Winston Salem, NC - The state troppers sit off behind a set of very thick bushes that keep them out of site untill after you have passed them. They will bust you for going 70 in a 65, especialy if you're in the left lane and you drive a deisel truck or any kind of sports car. they bust anyone and everyone. More so on weekends and the summer but they are always there really bad in the morning time and if you run radar dector then you know they stick there. City cops do the same thing as well but not as bad. State troppers are the worst for it.

Most often umarked cars and motorcycles, usually a team of 2. Posted at 45 mph, most people do 55, and it is often safe as high as 65. All of us locals know this, and know to stay with the flow of the traffic. But for you out-of-towners, if the road is moving at 45, you'd best not pass!

Henderson, NC - Officer sits in a yellow state highway service pickup truck on overpass and "shoots" traffic. A group of state police marked and unmarked cars sit on Interstate on ramp waiting for their call to swoop down on the unsuspecting motorist. I observed this in the Northbound lanes of I-85 while heading to Durham on Sunday Labor day weekend and again on Monday when returning to Virginia from Durham. The trap was north of the Rest Area and had moved one exit north from it's location on Sunday. Very clever using the state highway truck apparently "inspecting" the overpass with his yellow work light flashing and all as the radar location. We saw 7 State police cars at this "Fishing hole", as the police call it and they were all busy ticketing the unsuspecting motorists.

Davidson, NC - Getting off the highway at Exit 30, you pass thru two roundabouts on Griffith St, heading towards Davidson College. Davidson Police are very frequently sitting just past the 2nd roundabout, by the park, between the roundabout and Beaty St. The speed limit is 25 in the roundabouts and STAYS 25 when you leave them. I've seen cops at multiple tims of day; yesterday I saw 4 cars pulled over on a Sunday afternoon.

Davidson, NC - When the local police in this sleepy college town aren't shaking door knobs and answering alarm calls they are enjoying their favorite past time - writing tickets. The speed limit in town does not go above 35 mph. Enforcement of the speed limit and any other minor infractions can be quite rigorous. I believe that the police in this town are competent in their jobs but do have a "Napoleon Complex" since their calls for service are low and it leaves a lot of time to write citations. The Town of Davidson is small and is known as a great place for older officers to prepare for retirement and relax. Checkpoints are not uncommon either, especially on the I-77 exit ramp by Griffith Street, or the cut through road between Griffith Street and Hwy 115 that goes over the RR tracks.

Wilmington, NC - Same vehicle everytime, and I always see someone falling for it everyday on the way to school. Wilmington Police Department is getting clever with their speed traps lately... This one surprised me. Here's how it's done: Wilmington's unmarked '06 Light Blue Ford Mustang GT sits off to the side of MLK Parkway with his hazard lights on, as if broken down (Location varies, typically he sits directly past 23rd Street Exit, where the Speed Limit slows down to 50MPH), and waits for unsuspecting motorists to speed by. I literally see a new motorist pulled over every morning from this trap... Supposedly it's working.

Wilmington, NC - In Wilmington, I'm sure everyone has seen the new Police cars in their fleet, the Chargers, the Magnums, and Mustangs, some are marked, most are unmarked. Anyway, on Market Street in the D&E Dodge parking lot, the Police have cleverly mixed right in the brand new Chargers, and Magnums that are for sale right out front. It's actually a pretty good idea, because I didn't spot it at first until drove by and saw the lights in the front grill. I did another lap around about 30 minutes later, looked closer and saw an officer behind the wheel sipping on some coffee. So be on the look out for this, I've been seeing this occur consistantly over the past few weeks, anywhere from 8:30 or so, up until 5:00am.

<geo:lat>35.623</geo:lat>

Old Fort, NC - This one is a classic speed trap to boost the town budget. As you exit off of I-40 eastbound, after coming down through "The Old Fort Gap" a long down hill grade of five miles, the exit ramp is open, graded turn, tendency is to just let your foot off the gas and start dropping off speed. Around the first corner, however, the speed limit suddenly drops to 30 mph, just before the RR bridge overpass and there he is, waiting on the other side of the bridge. Detectors are useless, traffic is rarely heavy, your first warning is your detector screaming and its too late. I sat at the railroad depot, waiting for a friend recently and watched the show. As fast as the officer could write out tickets, he was raking them in. Tendency is very high priced tickets since coasting at a safe speed, you are still most likely going 45-50 mph. This is a classic, unfair speed trap, with poorly placed speed limit signs. I have a red sports car, use this exit frequently and believe me, I slam on the brakes before hitting that curve, and more than once with my detector screaming, I've drifted by at 25 mph and wave, the cop obviously a bit miffed he hadn't nailed me. Again, its the first exit into Old Fort, eastbound on I-40. Also, at the top of the gap, heading westbound, state troopers love to lurk at the top of the exit 66 ramp, nailing folks speeding up after the long climb up the mountain. See them there at least a couple of times a week. So on either end of the gap, be cautious.

Robbinsville, NC - A beautiful road with long sweeping curves, long straights, little traffic, and a totally unrealistic 45 MPH speed limit. This is probably the number one money maker for Graham County, with state and local enforcement. Plus, the tickets are unreasonable high ($140+) and little or no warnings given. While the prime targets are motorcycles, automobiles aren't immune. My suggestion is find another road or drive below the speed limit, just to be safe.

Asheville, NC - NC State Troopers periodically saturate the stretch of I-40 between the East Asheville exit and Black Mountain. Marked and unmarked cars frequent the onramps and the three median cut-throughs on this stretch. If you see one in an agressive posture, expect to see more. I've seen as many as six either stopping someone or ready to in one pass through this nine-mile stretch. The speed limit for westbound 40 drops from 65 to 60 about a mile to the east of the East Asheville exit. I've seen State Troopers sitting the wrong way on the off ramp at exit 55 to see people coming toward them that didn't adjust for the slowdown. West of exit 55 the Asheville police sometimes work I-40 heavily as well.
