<geo:long>-80.5949</geo:long>

Elloree, SC - Traveling south on State Hwy 47/ Cleveland Street posted speed limit is 55 mph. Driving past large stand of trees (Planted Pines) speed suddenly becomes 30 mph in front of Fire Station. There is no posted "Reduced Speed Ahead" signs of any kind prior to sudden posted speed change. City of Elloree police employ two unmarked cars, one black late model Impala "Darth Vader" unit with black rims window tinting and bank of concealed blue strobes under front visors and one white Ford Crown Victoria. Police units hide concealed behind trees on left side of street at Ulmer Street. Sudden 25 mph drop in speed with no posted speed reduction zone from 55 mph makes getting a ticket a certainty for out of state drivers. State Hwy 47/ Cleveland Street is an alternative route to the Santee State Park used by many visitors. Upon challenging police officer regarding signage and tactics, including request to verify and see any speed "lock in" on radar in patrol car incident officer became a hostile and confrontational to the point of threatening to arrest by inference and intimidation. Ticket written for 52 mph in a 30 mph zone for $180 fine. Maximum fine allowed by SC State Statute 56-5-1520 reads Sec G-3(3) in excess of fifteen miles an hour but less than twenty-five miles an hour above the posted limit by a fine of not less than fifty dollars nor more than seventy-five dollars. Although officer claimed to have been following me from "past the fire station", after recieving the ticket I drove back to area beyond this and saw that this was a practical impossibility. This officer simply saw that I had a North Carolina tag and pulled up behind me when I pulled over near the intersection of State Hwy 6 and 47 to look at my road atlas to confirm directions.

Plan to be at the limit before you pass the sign or you may be contributing to the town's coffers. Enforcement is especially common after dark.

Prosperity, SC - Speed drops from 55 to 35 when heading North on US 76 (into the town of Prosperity). This is the same point of the town limits so the cops like to sit at an antique store, in a parking lot at the elementary school (behind a row of hedges), and in a hidden drive. They sit out there after dark (typically) with their lights off just waiting on someone. I got busted when the "reduced speed ahead" sign was down for *some reason* and I was doing "50" in a 35 although I argued that I wasn't going that fast but it didn't matter. Oh, the cops are always quick to offer you a high-dollar ticket in exchange for no points, haha.

Ridgeway, SC - The Town Police Chief likes to sit at the edge of the city limits where the speed drops from 55 to 35. They just put in a new interchange at I-77 and this makes this route a new favorite for him as a lot of unaware out-of-towners take this route to get to the local auction house. If there is a big auction going on you can almost guarantee he'll be setting a trap somewhere in town, particularly this spot because of its new availability to him. So be careful.

Goose Creek, SC - Old Moncks Corner Road in the area between HW 176 (St. James Avenue) and Bramoor sub division is a favorite of the Goose Creek PD. The speed on that road is 30mph past the Goose Creek Recreation Center, then it turns into 45mph. I have personally gotten 2 tickets and been pulled over 3 times on that road in 8 years, and I have witnessed perhaps hundreds of other people getting tagged by GCPD there over the years. They sit in their cars at the rec recnter parking lot, the church parking lot across the street, or at the library down the road pinging people. If you're doing more than 40mph in that area they are going to nail you every time.

Out well past the town area is a speed limit sign behind a bush, but "Barney" is out by the interstate, because he knows there's no logic to a speed zone in that area and the pickings are easy. He writes his tickets for being a 35 MPH zone although the sign says 45 MPH. When you go to court the saga continues when instead of calling cases (and they have many) they just ask if anybody wants to settle for half the fine. Why bother to explain that the ticket is incorrect anyway? I'm sure the judge would have the same attitude as "Barney". It's best to avoid this town as we now do.

Jamestown, SC - The people of Jamestown should be ashamed of what I witnessed in traffic court. The judge had about 8 defendents. He raised the cash fine on all of them, none under $200 and through out the points. So it's a cash cow this town has going here. I have travelled through Jamestown for years and know like everyone else how the town is. I didn't receive the ticket, but I know no matter what my speed, it's just a matter of time. This is a gross injustice to the people coming through Jamestown. Also, none of the people in the courtroom were from Jamestown. The ticket my friend received had a PO Box on it, no court physical address or phone number. All of that info was highlighted along with the amount of the fine. The officer put on the ticket that the driver was the owner of the vehicle, which wasn't true, it was a borrowed car. I am going to do all I can to stop this scam. I read some of the "rebuttals" on this site, it's pretty obvious they know they have a scam going and don't want it to stop. What a miserable little town.

Saint George, SC - The local police patrol issuing citations at every given opportunity on this 4 lane stretch through the main part of St. George. We were issued a citation (56 in a 45) and while the cop was still in the parking lot with the front of his vehicle (and radar) facing away from Highway 78, he after giving us the ticket immediately pulled out and stopped a passing truck towing a trailer. There was no possible way he could have clocked the driver because the radar system was pointing in opposite direction at the time he pulled the next driver.

Clemson, SC - Heading east on US 123, toward Greenville, approximately 3/4 miles from State Hwy 93. At the top of the hill, as you go under an unmarked bridge overpass (no exists), an city patrol car will park about 300 yards pass the bridge as the highway slopes downward such that once you top the hill, and go under the bridge, you suddenly encounter the patrol car as it faces you. The highway speed is 45, but since you are well out of Clemson by then and on a divided four lane highway, the tendency is to pick up a normal "open-highway" speed as you head uphill toward the bridge. By time you hit the hilltop and go under the bridge, you're well past the posted speed limit sign way back toward town.

Simpsonville, SC - Simpsonville S.C. is a suburb of Greenville S.C. While I have not received a ticket, I have noticed several people who have. Simpsonville utilizes at least two unmarked vehicles. A silver Mustang and a dark blue Camaro. They are often on W. Georgia Rd. and particularly on the two frontage roads in either side of I-385, which run between W. Georgia and Fairview Rd. A small town that utilizes unmarked vehicles to enforce traffic laws just screams "speed trap". The speed limit on these frontage roads is 35 mph. The steep decline on the roads often results in cars going over the speed limit. Simpsonville also utilizes a Mayor's Court. Friends tell me the Mayor's court tells offenders if they plead guilty and pay the fine (ridiculously high fines of $200.00 for 5 - 7 mph over the speed limit), the court will not put points on their driving record. Again..this tactic just screams "speed trap" and if not, it should be against the law.

Ridgeland, SC - Passing through town of Ridgeland on I-95 at about noon, I saw no less than three cops with people pulled over, and two more waiting to catch people. Some of the cars looked like state and county law, but most of them were city cops. There is no reason for city cops to be on an interstate, Ridgeland Police need to stay in their own town and make sure their palm trees don't fall over. The speed limit on I-95 really should be 75 anyway cause it's so flat and straight with little traffic.

Hampton, SC - Nature of trap is to catch motorists coming into town during transition from a 45-mph zone to a 30-mph zone. I got ticket, and immediately after, the officer pulled another motorist (before I had even left the scene).

Hilton Head Island, SC - As a full time courier on the Island, I know most of the roads around here and this is one of the most reliable locations for the "Tax-Man" to be located. That being on the down-side in each direction of the East/West bridge. Meaning if you're coming over the crown, (top) of the bridge,(over Broad Creek), make good & sure you're doing 40 mph. They park on the far right of the highway bridge usually in unmarked cars. Frequency is, (again) unknown, but more so during quota time, (i.e. the last of the month)

Hilton Head, SC - After exiting toll booth, speed limit is 40mph after being 55mp before entering toll booth zone. A high bridge is being crossed and at the top and downside, police cars sit daily and trap tourists to the Island. It is normal for a car to accelarate on the down side of the bridge and will exceed 40mph unless brakes are applied. I have never received a ticket but observe this on a almost daily occurance.
