Manassas, VA - Speed trap is located on Coverstone Rd. between Rt. 234 and Ashton. Traveling from Rt. 234 toward Ashton there's a slight rise in the road which limits your vision of the roadway as you approach Ashton. Guess who sits on the other side of the rise? That's right Manassas' finest running radar.

Ashburn, VA - •I see officers in this spot about 3 out of 5 business days per week, nearly every week of the last 2 years. It's always 2 officers on motorcycles. They use some kind of speed detection device that they hold close to their face and look through, similar to binoculars, but it resembles an "old school" radar gun. The officers wear dark clothing (dark motorcycle boots and the brown Loudoun County outfit) and stand in front of a dark bush so they blend in well. They always shoot radar westbound on Lo Co Pkwy catching speeders on their way to work, most heading towards the Dulles Greenway. I've never been caught, but it seems as if one officer constantly shoots radar and the other writes tickets. This is seems like a very lucrative spot for them, as I always see people being ticketed.

Arlington, VA - •The nearest speed-limit sign is half a mile before this trap. The road seems much like Arlington Blvd (VA Hwy 50)- it has two lanes each direction and a wide median as well. Unlike Arlington however, whose limit is 45, the limit here is 35. Many people make the mistake I did- in my rear-view mirror I saw the officer pulling over another car within seconds as I pulled away. But beware- I checked today, a few weeks later, and an officer was at the same trap right around noon, so the danger is not limited to rush hour. By the way, someone else posted a note in 2005 about a trap at N. Glebe and 21st. That is only 2.3 miles from this one. My guess would be that this mobile tax collection unit has just relocated, and will probably do so again when the party here is over. They could respond reasonably by posting a few more speed limit signs in the stretch I traveled but no, that would spoil the fun, wouldn't it?

Speed limit on the two lane 25 MPH, speed limit on the four dual lane 35 MPH. What they are doing is very distracting and treacherous as testified by the speed limit 25 MPH. If the speed limit is 25 MPH why are they putting you and your passengers at risk distracting you with an Engineered Radar Trap? I think there is some liability exposure to Arlington here on their part, Heaven forbid an accident should occur because they are providing an Engineered distraction.

The reduced speed is for worker safety, the contractor is not working at 4:30 A.m. Fines are much higher in a work zone for speeding, this is another effort to raise money for the couty, I guess the taxes we pay are not enough.

Suffolk, VA - Route 58 in the area of the Suffolk Weigh Station, east and west bound lanes. Local police and state police frequently operate Stationary Radar in the area, the strip of road commonly referred to as the “Six Lanes” by police is surrounded by the Great Dismal Swamp and many, many trees and really deep ditches that will swallow a tractor-trailer, has a proven history of one of the Deadliest Highways in Hampton Roads! And if you are headed into the City of Chesapeake, (East Bound, on Rt 58) watch out there too! The local police sit around the city line to catch the remaining ones from Suffolk!

Virginia Beach, VA - On General Booth Blvd south of Dam Neck Rd police follow drivers mainly in Chevy Impalas to give out tickets for various infractions. They patrol heaviest throughout the afternoon, but are almost alway present in unmarked Impalas and marked Crown Vic Cruisers. Tickets are given out more frequently before and after tourist season when they aren't distracted by out-of-staters and can more freely target locals for revenue.

Virginia Beach, VA - When you are either going into or leaving Dam Neck base, there will be a police car where there is a turning lane to go into either a neighborhood or a retirement community. He will sit there in the turning lane with his lights on (at night) and even have his turn signal on, but hes not turning, hes clocking you! Young sailors rushing off base, or speeding to make it in on time are easy prey for them. Mostly during summer, but have seen them this week!

Virginia Beach, VA - Driving towards Indian River Road on Ferrel Parkway, usually a marked police car will sit on the right of the two-lane road. I have seen an un-marked chevy impala a few times as well. They sit right by a Utility House/Shed, located right before the elementary school. You can visibly see a little driveway leading back to the shed, and sometimes the cops like to hide right behind the hedges. If your speeding 10mph+ over limit(55mph), you will not be able to spot them until they already got you clocked. Beware, I have seen them in the morning, afternoon, and almost always late at night. Also, beware of all the racer-kids flying down the road. The police can park in the middle of both sides about halfway down Ferrel.

Virginia Beach, VA - Lynnhaven Pkwy has become a death trap lately. The whole entire area near the SuperWalmart shopping center as well. If cops can't get you for speeding, they Will Find something else, such as improper turn, etc. When they catch you doing anything they will usually nickel and dime you in an attempt to give you multiple tickets. I got 3 in one night and didn't even do anything! Someone tried to hit me and I quickly swerved out of his way into another lane, but of course had no time to signal, and that's what I was charged with, plus inspection sticker expired, etc. Did he go after the guy that was going 65 mph right before a red light that almost hit me? No! Why should the VBPD go after real criminals and drunks.

Virginia Beach, VA - •Do Not Speed. I work right by the courthouse, and every day I work, i see atleast 10 people pulled over. Coming from Ferrell parkway all the way to the stop light by the courthouse, people get pulled left and right, sometimes multiple cars in a line. Right as you approach the courthouse, speed decreases from 55-50-45-35-25. A lot of the traffic is used to going 55 down the whole road and speed up right through the courthouse. 30mph is reason for them to pull you, and guaranteed that if you will get pulled from marked, unmarked, motorcycle, and SUV. Worst time to speed is early Saturday mornings. 6am-10am is when I watch the most people get pulled.

Yorktown, VA - •Cops usually stay staked out there early in the morning when school is back in session or early in the evening when everyone is coming home from work. I have observed a number of cops on the side of the road, behind signs and use the school parking lot for ticketing. When it says 25, it means 25 and not 30, I was going through there doing 27 and a cop almost pulled me over, he switched on his lights and then switched them off. I don't know if they would pull you over for doing 2 miles over the speed limit. I would love to go to court over that and see what the judge said. Probably would have laughed and thrown it out.

The vehicles are stationed along the emergency crossing lanes in the wooded areas along the highway. Additionally, there were two vehicles per crossing lane aimed inn each direction. On the reurn trip the same day, I counted 25 state patrol vehicles between Emporia (10 miles north of the NC/VA state line) and north of Richmond (near Exit 89) to Fredericksburg. This is obviously a state trap to boost revenue. I would like to see the statistics on how many out-of-state drivers were ticketed vs. others?

<geo:lat>36.7163</geo:lat>
<geo:long>-78.1214</geo:long>

South Hill, VA - •Scenario: Out-of-state drivers get off of I85 to travel west on 58 to get to the Martinsville Speedway for a NASCAR race, such as myself, knowing the penchant of Virginia's finest, resume cruise control speed of Exactly 65MPH (assuming posted I85 speed limit holds - see below). Before any readily evident posting to the contrary you round a curve (within 2 miles of I85) and there sits the local officer. He pulls you over and tells you that he has clocked you at 76 in what apparently is a 55 MPH zone. 76...even though the GPS record in the navigation system (shown to the officer) indicates that at no time (since leaving the hotel in Richmond earlier that morning) has the car exceeded 66MPH (apparently the speedometer/cruise control is off by about 1 or 2 MPH). Note re: speed change from Interstate to whatever 58 is: I researched speed limits before leaving home, again knowing the reputation of the local and state folks in uniform in Virginia, and learned that 58's limit was 60MPH -so I felt that 65MPH would be 'safe' given the total lack of traffic and beautiful weather conditions of race day (April 1st) - and given that every other Civilized state in the union has adopted a '5 over or below, let it go' attitude, due to Known speedometer errors. But clearly they know (happily, thanks to the fairly new revenue sharing arrangement between state and local agencies on state or interstate highways) that a driver in a new red convertible with the top down, with out-of-state tags is most likely Not going to make the effort to appear in court, and the Reckless Driving bit - driven by being, conveniently, more than 20 over - adds a handsome amount to the already stiff fine. To reiterate, it was a glorious, traffic-free, early Sunday morning on a limited-access, endless stretch of traffic light-free highway...you do the math. I've since learned that on that road they will hit you for one (1) MPH over. I have incontrovertible Proof that I was not doing 70-anything, and the officer did not want to be in any way confused by the facts - certifiably calibrated yes, but starting with a zero (0) really at 10 MPH, or the like. Yes, it's a great one and I am in the process of exploring the percent of out-of-state tickets that account for the Massive increase in issued citations that has occurred since the enacted revenue sharing law, and particularly on days when tourists, you know - the kinds of people you WANT to come to your state and leave their money behind - are there for things like NASCAR races, this year's big 400th Jamestown anniversary events, etc. After a little time spent at Colonial Williamsburg and the James River plantations during this trip, we had decided we would plan to return for some of that; not a chance! And we are telling anyone and everyone that will listen, read the blogs, etc., of this menace.

Bristol, VA - •State troopers will sit either in the median, which if you are going southbound is hidden by a small hill until you have actually passed the trooper, or the will be on the side of the oncoming Exit 10 ramp going northbound. You won't see that trooper until you have passed the ramp either, so when traveling past Exit 10(either north or southbound) make sure you are going the speed limit!

Wytheville, VA - I've been driving up and down I-81 for quite a while and I always use cruise control to control my speed around 65 mph. Last Thursday, I sped up to pass an 18 wheeler and returned to right lane doing 65 mph. 2 miles later, I got pulled over for speeding.

Staunton, VA - •The entire city is a trap! Literally there is a 50% chance that any set of headlights you may encounter at night will be an officer. And I've noticed a definite bias being that if you aren't obviously on in your years they will pull you over. Everytime I see one it is a younger person they have...I have personally been both almost run off the road or nearly hit by older folks with not a cop in site. But...I have been pulled over several times for things that do not cause a direct danger to any other motorists. I'm 21. If you're under 50 and it is past 9pm...Watch Out!

Danville, VA - •On Piney Forest Rd., between Riverside Drive and Memorial Drive, there is local enforcement. Speed limit of 30 below average limits of 35, signs are hidden -- tree line recently trimmed back. No warning, no negotation, will not show you clocked speed and approches vehicle with hand on her gun. Treats law abiding citizens as criminals. Have seen ten auto's stopped in last two months since I was ticketed for 43 in 30 (no way). I had just crossed Riverside (from a dead stop) and had not even made it to the entrance of Long John Silver's (less than 300 yards).
