5 Gorgeous California Motorcycle Rides
California has some of the most diverse environments of any
state: from dense forests, to soaring mountains and vast deserts.
This makes it a haven for riders looking to enjoy some of the most
gorgeous roads in the country. Here are five of the very best
motorcycling roads in the Golden State:
- US Highway 101
Crescent City to Eureka US-101 - The coastal highway, also known
in this area as the "Redwood
Highway," is an iconic road and a makes for a great ride
as it hugs the rugged and beautiful north California coast. With
the Pacific ocean on one side, and the giant old-growth redwoods
of Redwood National Park on the other this is an unforgettably
scenic ride. Unfortunately for riders, this area also has
relatively high rainfall due to the moist ocean air having to go
up and over the Coast Range and weather conditions can change
quickly.
- State Route 108
Sonora to Sonora Junction - The Sonora Pass Highway winds its
way across the central Sierra Nevada range. A smooth asphalt
road surface lets riders make the most of the great sweeping
curves and hairpin turns as the road climbs to an elevation of
9,624 ft. The views are so stunning that regular stops are are a
good idea to allow riders to enjoy the road and still soak in
the magnificent scenery. In fact, so fantastic is this ride that
making the it in both directions is recommended to fully
appreciate it.
- Interstate 5
Grants Pass to Mt. Shasta - If only all interstate highways were
this awe-inspiring. Riding I-5 into northern California from
Oregon gives fantastic views of the volcanoes of the southern
Cascade range, including massive Mt.
Shasta. It is tempting to gaze into the distance at the
beautiful snow covered peaks, so riders should watch out for the
usual interstate traffic, the drivers of which may also be
looking at that same scenery.
- State Route 190
Olancha to Death Valley Junction - Death Valley, the name says
it all. What may come as a surprise though, is
that SR190 through this inhospitable place with its sweeping
vistas of distant mountains and vast empty desert is actually
one of the best rides out there. Temperatures on the valley
floor can be very high, but drop sharply as elevation increases;
carrying extra layers to wear is recommended, as is insurance
from www.MotorcycleInsurance.com as
in case of an incident nobody wants to be stranded in Death
Valley.
- State Route 96
Willow Creek to Hornbrook - SR-96 in northern California is a
great road for sport riding and is as rewarding as it is hard
work. With 147 miles of twisty highway winding its way through
the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests as it follows the
Klamath River, this tree-lined route is sure to please those
riders looking for a more challenging ride in gorgeous
surroundings without traffic lights or stop signs to spoil the
fun.
